Ankokuji is a historical temple founded by Takauji Ashikaga, the first general of the Muromachi Shogunate in the mid-14th century. It is said that this temple was the birthplace of Takauji, and in the precincts there is also a well for baths and a tomb for Takauji and his mother, Kiyoko Uesugi.
The main hall holds many important national cultural properties such as "Sunshakasanzonzazou", and it is a valuable cultural heritage that conveys the history of Ayabe.
During the autumn vacation season, the precincts are colored with autumn leaves and many tourists visit.
The Ankokuji Momiji Festival is held lively every year in mid-November.
